IF YOUR MISSION, IS TO HELP A VETERAN, YOU MUST FIRST FIND WHAT THE VETERAN NEEDS, THEN FILL THAT NEED.
I’ve been volunteering my time at the local VA for nearly four years: capturing Veteran stories for the Veterans History Project/Library of Congress, working as a Patient Advocate facilitating and coordinating a host of needs ranging from Benefits and Disabilities outside the VA, to coordinating workflows, appointments and etc., inside the VA.
But, I never stopped to think about what I was really doing, I was “Full Filling a Veteran Need”.
For example, if a Veteran needed a DD214, I would send or give the Veteran a SF180 to complete or I would send the Veteran a link to complete from on line. If a Veteran told his/her story, I was fulling a need for recognition. If I facilitated a dental appointment or emailed literature about a specific VA program that the Veteran was entitled to, I was filling a medical or information need.
KEEP THE FOCUS – FILL THE NEED.
